A root canal is a dental procedure designed to treat infections or damage within the tooth’s pulp, the innermost soft tissue that contains nerves and blood vessels. This treatment aims to preserve the natural tooth and alleviate pain caused by pulp inflammation or infection.

The process begins with the dentist administering local anesthesia to numb the affected tooth and surrounding area, ensuring the patient remains comfortable throughout the procedure. The dentist then creates a small opening in the tooth’s crown to access the pulp chamber and root canals. Infected or damaged pulp tissue is carefully removed, and the canals are cleaned, disinfected, and shaped to prepare them for filling.

After cleaning, the dentist fills the canals with a biocompatible material called gutta-percha to seal them and prevent future infection. The tooth is then sealed with a temporary or permanent filling. In many cases, a crown is placed over the tooth to provide additional protection and restore its function.

Root canal treatment is highly effective, often saving a tooth that might otherwise need to be extracted. It alleviates pain, restores tooth function, and maintains the integrity of the patient’s bite, contributing to long-term oral health.
