Third Molar Extraction

Third molar extraction, commonly known as wisdom tooth removal, is a surgical procedure to remove the third molars located at the back of the mouth. These teeth often emerge in late adolescence or early adulthood and can cause problems due to limited space in the jaw, leading to potential complications.

The procedure typically begins with an evaluation by the dentist or oral surgeon, who will review X-rays and assess the position of the wisdom teeth. Local anesthesia is administered to numb the area, while sedation options are available for more complex cases or anxious patients.

During the extraction, the surgeon makes an incision in the gum tissue to access the tooth and may need to remove bone or section the tooth into smaller pieces for easier removal. After extracting the tooth, the area is cleaned and the incision is sutured if necessary.

Post-operative care involves managing pain and swelling with prescribed medications or over-the-counter pain relievers, as well as following specific care instructions to promote healing and prevent infection. Recovery time typically spans a few days to a week.

Third molar extraction helps prevent complications such as impaction, infection, and damage to adjacent teeth, contributing to better overall oral health and alignment.
